Lesson 2: Situational 1 (Buying Coffee)
While waiting for my friend, James, at the mall I decided to go buy something to drink.
————————————————-
Vendor: Magandang umaga.
Salamat.
————————————————-
Magandang umaga. Ano po ba ang gusto mo?
(Good morning. What do you want?)
Pabili ng isang kape na may gatas at asukal.
(I want to buy one coffee with milk and sugar)
Sandali lang po
(wait a moment)
Ito na po ang kape mo na may gatas at asukal.
(Here is your coffee with milk and sugar)
Pabili din ng isang bote ng tubig. Magkano ba ang lahat?
(I’ll also buy a bottle of water. How much is everything?)
“Po” is used as a sign of respect or formality. As much as possible it is added to a sentence if someone wants to show respect. To be informal just drop the word po from a sentence.
Ito ang bayad. Salamat.
(Here’s my payment. Thank You)
————————————————-
Magandang umaga.
Pabili ng kape na may gatas at asukal.
Sandali lang po.
Magkano ba ang lahat? Or if you simply want to ask “how much?” you just say, Magkano?
Pabili ng isang bote ng tubig.
————————————————-
Here’s a couple more words:
Yes: Oo or Opo
No: Hindi or Hindi po
————————————————-
So what how do you say good bye in tagalog?
Paalam

My name is Mark. I’m a Filipino living in Canada. Now that that short introduction is out of the way, I’ll begin with this idea that I had last night. Since 2011 is just around the corner, let’s just say, my new year’s resolution is to share my knowledge of the Filipino language.
I have been searching through the internet for decent Filipino tutorials. Sadly, I could not find any that my friends who don’t speak Filipino can easily refer to.
I hope that these tutorials will help you get a better grasp of the Filipino languge, known as Tagalog; to be able to greet your Filipino speaking friends in the way they would be most surprised and happy about. Have fun learning :)
